FIND OUT HOW WE CAN HELP

leading criminal lawyer

Ian Brookie is a barrister with over 20 years of legal experience and proven performance across a broad range of legal practice areas.

Ian specialises in criminal law cases and acts for clients from all walks of life who find themselves facing charges in Court.

Ian is an independent courtroom specialist who focusses solely on achieving the best result for his clients.

His experience in acting in serious and high-profile criminal cases means that he has the skills to help, whatever the case.

Ian is no “one man band” – he has a team of two other barristers (called “juniors”) who work solely for him. This is to make sure that Ian’s team can meet the demands of servicing all clients – especially if matters arise for clients that need to be dealt with urgently – such as an arrest. It also helps ensure cost efficiencies when working on client files because Ian’s juniors will do work that is appropriate to their level. Any difficult and/or high profile matters will usually be handled by Ian personally.

Ian and his team can provide sound advice on any case, from traffic and discharge without conviction cases all the way through to serious sexual, violence or drugs charges and including murder/manslaughter.

Give Ian’s team a call now. They can help.

Ian’s professional background

Ian has a solid ten years’ experience at the private bar and has defended many cases in that time, in all levels of our Courts.

Ian began his legal career in 2001 as a solicitor for a large Auckland firm.

In 2003, Ian joined the office of the Crown Solicitor in Auckland – Meredith Connell. While a Crown prosecutor, Ian prosecuted a wide array of cases and jury trials on behalf of the Crown, the Police and other Government entities in both the District and High Courts.

In 2013, Ian went to the private bar and became a ‘barrister’.

Over the years, Ian has appeared as counsel in a great many jury trials. Ian has represented defendants in murder cases, rape cases, drugs cases (big and small), fraud, violence, driving and regulatory cases.

Ian also assists clients with appeals in the Criminal Courts and appears regulatory in the High Court and Court of Appeal as counsel. Ian has also appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court.

What all this means is that, if you face a charge in our Courts, Ian and his team will be able to help you, whether it involves an early guilty plea or whether we are fighting the case all the way – whatever is best for you.

Ian is also available to act on appeals for clients following trials.

Ian helped establish Sentinel Chambers in Central Auckland. Sentinel Chambers brings together over a dozen experienced and talented lawyers and a wealth of litigation experience.

The barristers at Sentinel call on that collective pool of experience to support each other and our clients. Though they work alongside each other and share offices called “Chambers", the independence of each barrister at Sentinel Chambers is jealously guarded.

That is because clients need to be able to rely on getting the most accurate and frank advice about the situation that they are in. That is what a barrister should do and that is what you’ll get from Ian.

Two judges have gone to the bench directly from Sentinel Chambers in recent years; that is testament to the quality of the Chambers.

Sentinel Chambers embraces diversity in all forms.

SERVICES

Ian is available to act for clients in any of the Courts within the Auckland area.

Ian and his team offer a wide array of services.

Ian is able to advise and assist clients in negotiating every stage of a criminal case, from preliminary witness statements, to suspect interviews, to procedural court appearances, through trial and to appeals.

Make no mistake – if you are facing a criminal complaint or investigation, the sooner you obtain legal advice, the better.

Ian’s advice will prepare you for the decisions that you will need to make, and to help you make better decisions.

Ian is also able to assist victims of crime, including liaising with Police staff regarding witness statements and/or liaising with the Police to spur them into investigating a criminal complaint.

In terms of geography, Ian has, and does accept instructions to act in areas outside of Auckland, from Northland all the way down to Dunedin (and beyond) including Palmerston North in particular. However, such cases will involve additional travel costs that will need to be met by the client. Such costs can be reduced given recent adoption of video link facilities by the Courts.

Don’t worry – Ian is not there to judge his clients, he is there to help his clients through the ‘maze’ that is the New Zealand criminal justice legal system.

Ian’s advice is designed to help clients make good decisions about their cases.

In formulating his advice for each client, Ian calls upon his wealth of experience in dealing with judges, juries, Police, Crown prosecutors and witnesses – both civilian and experts.
